Types of Colored Contact Lenses
What kinds of colored contact lenses are available? Basically, there are three types. Visibility tints are very light--they don't change your natural eye color. These tints are used simply to help you see the lens better during insertion and removal. Should your lens fall out or be dropped while you are handling it, the visibility tint will help you spot the lens wherever it lands.
In contrast, enhancement tints are specially designed to change your eye color. These lenses work for people with light colored eyes--the color of the lens works with your natural eye color to create a new and enhanced color. If a person with dark eyes were to wear an enhancement tint, there would be little (if any) visible change.
Opaque tints are needed to dramatically change the color of dark eyes. These are far more intense, and they can really change your appearance. These lenses have a colored circle that covers up the iris. Your true eye color will not be visible at all. People with dark eyes will look as though their eyes are naturally blue, green, hazel, etc. Your vision is not affected by this color--light will still pass into your pupil and allow you to see clearly. If you have astigmatism, you still may be able to wear colored lenses--ask your eye doctor about colored toric lenses during your next visit.
Only your eye doctor can prescribe colored lenses for you. If you'd like to try different colors, ask him or her for sample lenses that you can try out to see which color you like best. He or she will need to make sure the lens is fitted properly before prescribing you a particular brand of lens and level of correction. Once you have your prescription, the color you choose will be up to you. Just make sure that you follow your doctor's instructions at all times.
