Contact Lenses Care
- The Essentials of Contact Lenses Care- Proper Fit, Contact Lens Solution, and Contact Lens Cases
1. Verify your order
When you receive your contact lenses package, be sure to verify the content of the package to make sure that you got the correct lenses. Read the power and parameters on every box or vial before you open any of them.
2. Follow your doctor instructions exactly as indicated
Check the instructions you were given by your doctor, for correct use and replacement schedule. Every person can have a different schedule and wear instructions.
3. Each lens type may have different care instructions
If you ordered Daily Disposable contact lenses, you should remove them after one day of wear and discard them. These are designed for one day wear only. There is no storing requirement for this type of lens.
If you ordered Daily Wear contact lenses, you should remove them at the end of the day, clean them and store them in the case properly.
If you ordered Continuous Wear contact lenses, these lenses are made to be worn for up to six nights and then you should remove them. Take them out and clean them and store them correctly.
There are many other types of wear schedules that are set and designed by the manufacturer. Please be sure to check with your doctor on the appropriate wear that is suitable for your eyes and your conditions.
4. Handling the lenses
It is imperative that you follow a protocol of hi hygiene to help eliminate any potential problems and to help protect the life of the lens.
- Always wash your hands with soap before handling your contact lenses or touching your eyes.
- Make sure to rinse you hands well to wash off any soap residue and dry your hands in a clean towel
- Develop a routine of applying the same lens in the same order. This helps you avoid any possible mix ups between the left (OS) and right (OD) eyes.
- Open the contact lens storage case gently and make sure the lens is moist and clean before you take it out of the case.
- Verify that you picked the lens up on the right side and that it did not turn inside out. You can examine the lens on the tip of your finger to make sure that you can see a natural curve in a bowl like shape with its ends tending inwards.
- Apply the lens in the eye, per the fitting demonstration you went through with your eye care provider.
5. The Storage case
Replace your lens case on a regular basis. The use over time of the same storage case can create a build up of particle residue that could be harmful for the eye. You should always keep an extra case available.
6. Cleansing Solution
It is highly recommended that you use fresh batch of solution in the storage case by tossing out any remaining old solution, rinsing the storage case and then applying a fresh supply of solution.
Maintain a good supply of solution and always check for the expiration date on the product. Manufacturers make solution products in various sizes and it is a good idea to keep smaller size bottles in several places like the office, car, bag, locker, as it must be available when needed.
Stick to the same solution that you have been using and is appropriate for the contact lenses you are using. If you are going to change the type of solution you use, it is recommended that you call your eye care provider and make sure they do not have a medical objection to the change.
